Live NE News
Public Education Northeast (PEN) is attempting to better understand what school programs and offerings are important to parents, students, and the community of northeast Minneapolis. We wish to collect opinions from as many parents of students and other stakeholders in the northeast corridor, including current Minneapolis Public School (MPS) parents as well as parents of children who have chosen other schools. We really want to know the reasons for how you make decisions about your child’s education.

The MPS school board is in the process of completing a strategic planning process which will allow them to shape the direction of all schools.

How do we wish to shape the schools in the northeast community?

That’s why your input is crucial!

Did you know about the Edison High School Scholarship Fund? PDF Print E-mail

The Edison Scholarship Fund held it's annual Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 24th.  Approximately $1.2 million of corporate, foundation and other dedicated funds were awarded to 2007 Edison High School Graduates who will go on to college or other post-secondary education opportunities.  The Edison Scholarship Fund coordinates scholarship grant opportunities from organizations such as the Wallin Foundation, the Gates Foundation, the Coke Foundation and the Edison Sports Foundation.  The Edison Scholarship Fund Committee, a non-profit organization separate from Edison High School, was founded in 1953 in order to recognize students for their academic efforts.  One of the first scholarship awards, named the Cook Awards, were established in honor of the first principal of Edison, Mr. Cook.

Edison receives more scholarship funds than any other high school in Minneapolis.

Who qualifies? According to Mike Iacarella, Edison Teacher and Chair Person of the Edison Scholarship Fund, any Edison High School senior who is interested and has at least a 3.0 G.P.A. is invited to apply.  A student's grade point average is not the only determining factor in a scholarship award.  The committee also reviews a student's community service, school involvement, and other extra-curricular activities. The scholarships are not "need" based.  The Edison Scholarship Committee makes an effort to award funds to as many seniors who apply as possible.  The committee also takes considerable time and care in matching students to the "right" type of scholarship opportunity. The Edison Scholarship has established many partnerships over the years with educational organziations such as the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, and Upward Bound.
