The August 24th Fundraising Event Was A Success! We Know You Had A Great Time But Don't Forget About The Northeast Barbeque on August 30th! Go To www.BarbequeNE.info for more information on the Barbeque. About The Fundraiser, Read on... The 2nd JSP Fundraiser was held in the Italian American Club on the SE corner of Central & 23rd Ave NE (2221 Central Ave NE). The event started at 6 PM and ended a little after 10 PM. It was a great turn-out! Food & Drink sponsors of the event were Marino's Deli on Johnson Street NE (Subs), Marina's Grill & Deli on University (Gyros & fixin's), Crescent Moon Bakery (Pizza), Columbia Grounds Coffee (coffee), Central Ave Liquors (wine), Barley John's Brewpub (Beer) and Eastside Food Cooperative spaghetti too! (Made By Northeast Legendary Cook Tamsen Brock!) We invite you to join in on this next phase of JSP renovation - the time is here to rebuild the softball diamond backstop. The fundraising is underway! Your contribution will be a means for neighborhood residents, business owners, youth, athletes, Edison High School and the arts community to come together as the renovation of Holland's only park is completed. The new backstop will use surrounding elements, such as the brick of the school and the ironwork of the bridge in the basin, to inform the style. It will also be a historical marker. Did you know that a Minneapolis Firefighter is credited with inventing the game of softball? Thanks to the efforts of Lewis Rober, a Minneapolis Fire Department lieutenant in the 1890's, our City is known as the home of softball. Rober adapted a Chicago version of "indoor-outdoor as a way to keep off-duty firefighters fit. The game was an instant hit with firefighter teams around the City, and was referred to as Kitten League Ball, the Kitten Ball, and eventually became known as softball. What a grand opportunity we have to honor the innovator of this hugely popular pastime and the men and women who serve as firefighters.
As I mentioned, the new backstop will be one of the finishing touches on JSP. Let me take a moment to recap the considerable improvements to date. They include a refurbished pool, new utilities and restroom building, all new play equipment exclusive to our park, more than 20 mature birch and burr oak trees, and new grass. Impressive? Yes! The last of the good news, No: In the near future look for the installation of an original artwork. In Spring 2006, after a highly competitive selection process, JSP received an arts grant from the City of Minneapolis. A committee including Holland residents and Edison staff selected a nationally recognized sculptor to create a piece that would reflect the neighborhood and involve students in its production.
Please make your donations payable to the Holland Neighborhood Improvement Association You can mail your tax deductible donation to HNIA, 2516 Central Avenue NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418. In the memo write "JSP Backstop". If you like the instant records generated by using a debit or credit card you can use the JSP PayPal component. Your donation will be forwarded to the Holland Neighborhood Improvement Association. Watch www.SportsNE.info and www.EducationNE.info and www.LiveNE.info and www.MoviesInThePark.info for more information on Northeast sports, education, events etc. Again, thanks for joining us at the fundraising event and mark your calendar for August 30th because it's time to have a good 'ole hometown barbeque. Take a break and get away from work for a few hours. Parents - think of the events as an excuse to go out on a date. Your children are welcome to attend too! It's easier when they are with the other kids. Let them run around and self-entertain. It's a chance for you to actually talk with your spouse! The Northeast Community, Edison Staff and Parent Barbeque will be held August 30th from 3 PM - 9 PM at 705 22nd Avenue NE! |
